JSA Design were appointed by Pub Culture to assist in the design of their latest venture The Engine Room – Bar & Bistro. The project involved the fit out of the former Engine Room situated within the ground floor of a former fire station in Sunderland City Centre as part of it’s extensive refurbishment.

The Fire Station was originally built in 1907, but had stood empty since 1992. All of the existing glazed brickwork and floor tiles in the former engine room were retained and restored, along with the fireman’s pole in order to carry out a completely new yet sympathetic fit out of ground floor area breathing new life into the vacant space. The design includes the installation of a new horseshoe-shaped bar creating a focal point within the space with a 4 metre high back fitting, leather booth seating in the arched windows and new feature lighting.
